Counseling
"As
school social worker I meet with all of the students at Hutch School
to help them succeed in school and cope with their family members
(or their own) illnesses. This is accomplished through individual
and group counseling, collaboration with parents, teachers, the
medical team, and community professionals to ensure that students
receive proper educational and emotional support.
A
diagnosis of cancer affects every member of the family. Children
benefit emotionally from accompanying their family to Seattle where
they can be part of the familys cancer journey. Many different
emotions may be experienced by children during this time including
worry, sadness, guilt, jealousy, isolation, anger, loneliness, homesickness
and fear about getting cancer.
As school counselor, I am a supportive resource for children as
they attempt to cope with all these emotions. When a child enters
Hutch School, they will have an initial meeting with me. This meeting
gives me a chance to get to know the child and understand his or
her environment at home and here in Seattle. I also spend time with
students in the classrooms, at lunch, on field trips, and in on-going
counseling. I am also available to meet with parents.
Hutch School offers children a place to learn, make friends, and
gain support from their peers, teachers, and counselor. We hope
you will take advantage of this unique, supportive and highly educational
resource.

Art
Program
As
well as incorporating art into our morning class time, we offer
art one to two times per week. This art class is 1.5 to 2 hours
and occurs during class hours. Art is a wonderful avenue for self
expression and reflection as well as an area of strength for many
students. We believe that during this time of additional stress
and change, students benefit from the time to work with various
mediums and art forms. It is a time to be with students of different
ages, learn new skills, recognize one's own skill, and allow the
mind to be comforted through creativity. The classes are taught
by a combination of Hutch School teachers and local artists who
allow access to a variety of art materials and expertise in the
areas of drama, visual arts, and music. Because we provide lessons
on technique, as well as encourage a relaxed environment for students
to go in their own direction, we can provide art credit. Hutch school
also has a piano onsite, and can arrange for piano lessons for students.
